Calvin de Haan's story
Growing up in Carp, Ontario, Calvin de Haan developed into a defenceman known for composure with the puck and steady transitional play. He spent a season with the Kemptville 73's in the Central Junior A Hockey League, earning Rookie of the Year honours in 2007–08 after posting 42 points in 58 games, before moving on to the Oshawa Generals in the OHL.
In his first OHL campaign he finished second in team scoring with 63 points and collected team awards as top rookie and top defenceman, while also appearing in the OHL All-Star Game and the 2009 CHL Top Prospects Game. Although ranked 25th by NHL Central Scouting, the New York Islanders traded to acquire the 12th overall pick and selected him in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. The season following his draft year was cut short by a torn labrum that required surgery.
De Haan turned pro in 2011–12, splitting time between the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the AHL and the New York Islanders; he made his NHL debut on December 15, 2011. He was named to the 2012 AHL All-Star Team and established himself as a regular on the Islanders’ blueline in subsequent seasons, signing multiple contracts with the club. Injuries, including another shoulder surgery, interrupted his progress at times and sidelined him for extended stretches.
On July 3, 2018 he signed a four-year deal with the Carolina Hurricanes and played a key role in a blue line that reached the Eastern Conference Finals in 2019, appearing in a career-high 12 playoff games. He was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks on June 24, 2019, and later returned to the Hurricanes organization in 2022. He then signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning for 2023–24, joined the Colorado Avalanche on July 1, 2024, and was included in a trade to the New York Rangers on March 1, 2025.
Internationally, de Haan recorded six assists in six games at the 2009 IIHF World U18 Championships and earned a silver medal with Canada at the 2010 World Junior Championships. He was named an alternate captain for Canada’s 2011 World Junior selection. His game is defined by disciplined defensive positioning, reliable first passes and steady mobility that helps his teams exit their own zone.
