Cam Atkinson's story
Growing up in Riverside, Connecticut, Cam Atkinson combined tennis and hockey as his primary pastimes and moved to Avon Old Farms at 15 to sharpen his game. A severe leg fracture during a tournament threatened his skating career, but after a second medical opinion and surgery he returned to form and continued on the development path.
Taken in the sixth round, 157th overall, by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2008 draft, Atkinson instead fulfilled his commitment to Boston College. He made an immediate impact for the Eagles — scoring the game-winner in his collegiate debut and establishing himself as a consistent offensive presence, before emerging as a high-volume goal scorer over the following seasons.
Atkinson’s professional journey began with Springfield in the AHL, where strong scoring earned him call-ups to Columbus. In the NHL he produced several notable performances, including multiple hat-tricks and a breakout stretch that led to his selection to the 2017 NHL All-Star Game. Columbus rewarded him with a lengthy contract extension in November 2017, and his 2018–19 campaign stands as his best statistically, tallying 41 goals and contributing in the playoffs.
In July 2021 he was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers. Injuries kept him out of the 2022–23 season and required surgery, though he returned the following year before Philadelphia bought out the final year of his deal. As a free agent he signed a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning in July 2024. He formally retired as a member of the Blue Jackets in October 2025 after signing a one-day contract and being honoured by the club.
On the ice, Atkinson’s profile was clear: undersized relative to many forwards but fast, agile, and a natural finisher. His combination of speed, soft hands and accurate shooting defined his role as a scoring threat and a player opponents had to respect in the offensive zone.
