Brett Murray's story
His breakthrough came in junior hockey, where Brett Murray combined finishing instincts with quick feet to draw attention. Born July 20, 1998, he helped the Carleton Place Canadians capture the Central Canada Hockey League title in 2015–16, then moved on to North American junior ranks where his scoring accelerated.
Murray had a short stint with the Penn State Nittany Lions beginning in early 2017, but it was back in the USHL with the Youngstown Phantoms that he made his biggest statistical impact. In 2018–19 he led the league in goals with 41, finished second overall with 76 points and earned a spot on the USHL First Team — performances that raised his professional profile.
Buffalo selected him in the fourth round, 99th overall, at the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, and his pro career followed a steady ascent. He signed a one-year AHL deal to join the Rochester Americans for 2019–20, then was awarded a two-year entry-level contract ahead of 2020–21. He reached the NHL with the Sabres organization and re-signed on a one-year, two-way contract for 2024–25 on July 1, 2024.
Seeking new opportunities overseas, Murray inked a one-year deal with the Nürnberg Ice Tigers of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga on October 16, 2025. Solid showings in Nürnberg brought interest from several European clubs, and on June 20, 2026 he agreed to a one-year contract with the Shanghai Dragons to play in the Kontinental Hockey League.
In plain terms, Murray is a goal-minded forward who plays close to the net and knows how to finish chances. His USHL scoring title and subsequent professional steps underline a player whose primary value lies in producing offence and adapting to different leagues and roles.
