Brock McGinn's story

Growing up in Fergus and developing in Guelph, Brock McGinn climbed the junior ranks before reaching the NHL. The Guelph Storm selected him in the third round of the OHL Priority Selection, and he skated for the Storm from 2010‑11 through 2013‑14. Early leadership responsibilities came in 2011‑12 when he was named an alternate captain. In his final junior season he posted career highs with 43 goals and 85 points, helped Guelph capture the J. Ross Robertson Cup and added five points in five games at the Memorial Cup, where the Storm fell in the final.

Carolina chose McGinn 47th overall at the 2012 NHL Entry Draft and signed him to a three‑year entry‑level deal on April 3, 2013. After the Storm’s playoff exit he joined the Hurricanes’ AHL affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers, to close out the 2012‑13 campaign. His first full professional year came in 2014‑15 with Charlotte, when he scored 15 goals and totalled 27 points in 73 games; that season also included a one‑game AHL suspension for charging.

McGinn earned his first NHL recall early in 2015‑16 and made an immediate impression: in his debut on October 16, 2015 he scored 55 seconds into the game and later added an assist in a victory over Detroit. He established himself as a regular with Carolina over the following seasons, signing a two‑year extension on June 28, 2017. His most productive campaign offensively was 2017‑18, when he had 16 goals and 30 points in 80 games. In 2018‑19 he played all 82 games and delivered the series‑clinching goal in double overtime of Game 7 against Washington, yielding the Hurricanes their first playoff win since 2009.

Entering free agency after 2020‑21, McGinn agreed to a four‑year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins on July 28, 2021 and recorded his first Penguin goal on October 16, 2021. After being placed on waivers and clearing them, he was traded to the Anaheim Ducks on March 3, 2023 (with a 2024 third‑round pick) for defenseman Dmitry Kulikov. He debuted for Anaheim on March 7 and scored his first goal with the Ducks on March 8. Upper‑ and lower‑body injuries interrupted parts of his tenure, and he returned to play in the 2023‑24 season on November 16, 2023.

Off the ice, McGinn is the youngest of three brothers who play professionally; Jamie and Tye also have pro careers. Alongside his father and brothers, he is among the owners of the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs of the Southern Professional Hockey League.

How we rate →
