Akil Thomas's story

As a rookie with the Niagara IceDogs in 2016–17, Akil Thomas immediately stood out for his playmaking: he set a franchise mark for points by a first‑year player and earned a spot on the OHL All‑Rookie team. Born in Toronto and raised in both Orlando and Toronto, he developed through the Toronto Marlboros and St. Michael's Buzzers before Niagara selected him 12th overall in the OHL priority draft in 2016.

Thomas climbed the junior ranks steadily. He finished the 2018–19 OHL season with 100 points and signed a three‑year entry‑level deal with the Los Angeles Kings on 16 March 2019. Projected by some as a first‑round prospect ahead of the 2018 NHL draft, he was ultimately taken 51st overall by the Kings. After returning from the 2020 World Junior Championship, he was traded to the Peterborough Petes in January 2020.

His early professional life involved adaptation and some setbacks. Loaned to Eisbären Berlin in September 2020 amid a delayed North American season, he later joined the Kings’ system and played for the Ontario Reign. There he was placed on a line with Quinton Byfield and Devante Smith‑Pelly, forming the first all‑Black line in professional hockey since the 1940s; in their debut together Thomas recorded a natural hat‑trick. Shoulder surgeries interrupted his progress, but after a July 2023 contract extension he posted new career highs in the AHL and made his NHL debut on 1 April against the Winnipeg Jets.

Internationally, Thomas has represented Canada at multiple levels. He played at the U17 and U18 world tournaments (2016–2018) and was part of Canada’s roster at the 2020 World Junior Championship, where he scored the gold‑medal winning goal against Russia; the Regional Municipality of Niagara designated 9 January 2020 as “Akil Thomas Day” in recognition.

On the ice, Thomas is defined by his vision and passing. His game is built around creating chances for teammates, a trait that has powered his point totals in junior hockey and helped him produce offensively at the professional level.
