His strengths: possession (92, among the best in the league), penalty kill (91, among the best in the league) and creation (76, well above average). On the other hand, power play (8, among the weakest in the league) and defense (24, well below average) hold him back.

Breaking down his WAR (goals above average), his biggest contribution: EV offense (+5.8); his biggest cost: finishing (-2.9).

A marked decline: his PAL was 79 in 2023-24, against 66 now; his WAR, though, went from 0.7 to 1.1.

Contract-wise, his Value score of 33 (poor return) weighs his output against what he costs: 50 is what that salary should buy.

Alex Pietrangelo's story

Growing up in King City, Alex Pietrangelo moved through the Greater Toronto minor system before stepping into major junior hockey, where his combination of size and skill made him a notable prospect. He broke into the Ontario Hockey League in 2006 and quickly established himself as a defenseman who could drive play and chip in offensively.

Pietrangelo spent his junior years with Mississauga (which later relocated to Niagara) and finished a stint in Barrie, putting up steady point totals and collecting recognition across the junior ranks. Those seasons also included appearances with Canada’s junior program, experiences that fed directly into his preparation for the professional game and the NHL draft.

Selected fourth overall by the St. Louis Blues in 2008, he signed an entry-level deal and made his NHL debut that October before returning to junior to complete his development. Over the following decade in St. Louis he evolved into a cornerstone of the club’s blue line, earning All-Star honours, a long-term contract extension and ultimately the captaincy in 2016. His career with the Blues reached a high point in 2019 when the team won the Stanley Cup; Pietrangelo scored the Cup‑clinching goal in Game 7 of the Final.

After a period of contract negotiations that did not produce an extension with Saint‑Louis, he entered free agency and in October 2020 signed a seven‑year deal with the Vegas Golden Knights that included a full no‑move clause. With Vegas he continued to be selected to All‑Star Games and played a prominent role in the club’s lineup, contributing both in his own end and on offence.

Internationally, Pietrangelo has represented Canada at several tournaments. He won gold with the national under‑20 team at the 2009 World Junior Championships, was part of Canada’s Olympic squad in 2014 that captured Olympic gold, and received individual awards at world competitions. His on‑ice profile is straightforward: a mobile, puck‑moving defenceman who quarterbacks the breakouts, joins the attack when appropriate and shoulders heavy defensive assignments.
