Breaking down his WAR (goals above average), his biggest contribution: finishing (+3.3); his biggest cost: EV defense (-1.2).

Alec Martinez's story

He made himself known early in big moments: in overtime of Game 7 of the 2014 Western Conference Final he scored the winner, and 12 days later he buried the double‑overtime Cup clincher for Los Angeles. Born 26 July 1987 in Rochester Hills, Michigan, Martinez moved as a child to Tualatin, Oregon, then to Fremont, California, while also spending time back in Michigan; he played junior hockey with the Santa Clara Blackhawks and San Jose Jr. Sharks and earned four varsity letters at Stoney Creek High School.

Selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the fourth round of the 2007 draft while skating for Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, Martinez turned pro with the Manchester Monarchs of the AHL in 2008. He made early NHL appearances in 2009–10 and then worked his way into a steady role after being recalled in November 2010. His first NHL goal came 24 November 2010 on the power play versus Carey Price. A two‑year deal followed in July 2011, and he was part of Los Angeles’ Stanley Cup triumph in 2012.

Martinez’s tenure in Los Angeles featured pivotal postseason heroics and steady defensive play. He signed a six‑year, $24 million extension in December 2014 and posted a career‑high 39 points during the 2016–17 season while playing all 82 games. During the 2012–13 lockout he briefly signed with the Allen Americans. His knack for scoring late, consequential goals is a recurring theme of that period.

On 19 February 2020 he was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights for two second‑round draft picks; his debut included a goal and an assist in a 5–3 win over Tampa Bay. Martinez agreed to a three‑year, $15.75 million contract in July 2021. He suffered a facial cut on 11 November 2021 that put him on long‑term injured reserve before being activated in March 2022. In the 2023 Final he scored twice to help Vegas capture his third Stanley Cup.

Internationally he represented the United States at the 2018 IIHF World Championship, recording one goal and two assists in ten games and earning a bronze medal. On the ice, Martinez has been a dependable, positionally sound defenseman who can move the puck and deliver occasional clutch scoring from the blue line.
