Alexandar Georgiev's story
Born in Bulgaria and raised in Russia from a young age, Alexandar Georgiev cut his teeth in Moscow with the Penguins before moving to the junior ranks of Khimik Voskresensk and then to Finland to join TPS. He first appeared at the senior level during the 2014–15 Liiga season, a key step in his development that put him on the radar of North American clubs.
Although he went undrafted after his seasons in Finland, Georgiev earned an invitation to the New York Rangers' development camp and converted that opportunity into a three-year entry-level deal signed on 18 July 2017. He split time between Hartford in the AHL and the Rangers organization, making his NHL debut on 22 February 2018 and collecting his first NHL win on 3 March of that year.
Early milestones with New York include a first career shutout on 21 November 2018 and a 55-save effort on 10 February 2019 that set a Rangers record for saves in regulation. A notable incident occurred on 3 March when he threw his stick toward the puck in a play that was reviewed and changed by officials. In July 2022 Colorado acquired his negotiating rights and soon signed him to a three-year, $10.2 million contract; he led the NHL in wins with 40 in his first season with the Avalanche and followed with 38 wins in 2023–24.
Georgiev was traded to the San Jose Sharks on 9 December 2024. After signing a one-year deal with the Buffalo Sabres on 12 September 2025 and being placed on waivers for contract termination on 23 November 2025, he signed a two-year contract with Spartak Moscow of the KHL on 25 November 2025. In that KHL season he made 24 appearances, recorded 12 wins and posted a 2.37 goals-against average before opting to terminate the remaining portion of his contract on 2 June 2026.
Internationally he holds both Russian and Bulgarian citizenship but represents Russia: he earned a silver medal at the 2016 World Junior Championship and a bronze at the 2019 senior World Championship. On the ice, Georgiev is known for handling heavy shot volume and for a technical, composed style honed across Russian and Finnish systems, traits that have allowed him to shoulder starting workloads at the highest levels.
