Andreas Athanasiou's story
Raised in London, Ontario, Athanasiou first drew attention in the Greater Toronto Midget ranks, posting 24 goals and 34 assists in 56 games for the Toronto Titans in 2009–10. Selected 81st in the OHL Priority Draft, he joined the London Knights as a rookie in 2010–11 and gradually grew into a reliable scorer at the junior level.
After breaking the 20‑goal mark in 2011–12 with London and attending the NHL draft combine, he was taken 110th overall by Detroit in 2012. An August 2012 trade sent him to the Barrie Colts, where he finished third on the club in 2012–13 with 29 goals and 38 assists, and then led Barrie in scoring in 2013–14 with 49 goals and 46 assists, ranking fifth in the OHL that season.
Detroit signed him to a three‑year entry‑level contract on 20 November 2013 and he made his AHL debut for Grand Rapids on 18 April 2014 versus Lake Erie. His first full pro season was interrupted by a broken jaw, yet he progressed to make his NHL debut on 8 November 2015 against the Dallas Stars and scored his first NHL goal two nights later on Braden Holtby of the Washington Capitals. He split time between Grand Rapids and Detroit in subsequent seasons and agreed to a one‑year deal with the Red Wings on 21 October 2017.
On 24 February 2020, Detroit traded him and Ryan Kuffner to the Edmonton Oilers for Sam Gagner and two second‑round draft picks (2020, 2021). Edmonton chose not to tender a qualifying offer on 7 October 2020, making him a free agent. He then signed a one‑year, $1.2 million contract with the Los Angeles Kings on 28 December 2020 and a one‑year, $2.7 million deal on 28 July 2021. As a free agent he joined the Chicago Blackhawks on 13 July 2022 with a one‑year, $3 million pact, signed a two‑year extension on 7 June 2023 at a $4,250,000 AAV and was assigned to the Rockford IceHogs on 24 November 2024.
Internationally, he was a member of Ontario’s gold‑winning squad at the 2011 World U‑17 Hockey Challenge, recording 2 goals and 3 assists in five games. His game is characterised by scoring instincts and offensive production developed through his junior years.
