Alexander Alexeyev's story
Born in Saint Petersburg on 15 November 1999, Alexeyev moved away from home early in his path to pro hockey. Chosen third overall by Metallurg Novokuznetsk in the 2016 KHL draft, he decided to continue his development in North America after being picked by the Red Deer Rebels in the CHL Import Draft; that experience exposed him to a different pace of play and also saw him improve his English while recovering from injuries and finishing high school.
His stint with Red Deer from 2016 to 2019 mixed strong offensive flashes with time missed due to injuries and personal loss. Still, he left major junior with a total of 21 goals and 80 assists for 101 points in 135 games across three WHL seasons. That résumé put him on draft boards for 2018: Washington selected him 31st overall in the first round, and he signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Capitals on 24 September 2018.
Transitioning to the professional ranks, Alexeyev began with the Hershey Bears, Washington’s AHL affiliate, registering a goal in his AHL debut and finishing his rookie campaign with 3 goals and 21 points in 58 games. With the 2020–21 North American schedule affected by the pandemic, the Capitals loaned him to Salavat Yulaev Ufa on 4 September 2020 so he could continue playing; he later made his NHL debut with Washington on 29 December 2021.
After six seasons within the Capitals organisation, he signed a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins on 2 July 2025. Alexeyev’s on-ice profile centres on steady defence and composure with the puck: he moves it cleanly, keeps his own end under control and offers a calm presence when asked to log significant minutes.
