Adam Fantilli secures six-year, $82.5M extension with Blue Jackets

Adam Fantilli and the Columbus Blue Jackets have put an end to their contract impasse, with the club announcing Thursday that the star centre has signed a six-year extension. The deal is worth $82.5 million in total, giving Fantilli a $13.75-million average annual value and keeping him under contract in Columbus through the 2031-32 season.

The agreement follows a drawn-out standoff between player and team that stretched through the summer and led to Fantilli missing the start of training camp. With the contract settled, the Blue Jackets can now move forward with their franchise cornerstone firmly in place as they try to climb the Eastern Conference standings in the coming years.

Blue Jackets lock in their franchise centre

General manager Don Waddell emphasized how central Fantilli is to the organization’s plans. In a statement, Waddell described him as having the speed, size and skill teams covet, along with a strong competitive drive, calling him "one of the most exciting young players in the NHL" and a major part of what Columbus is building.

Fantilli was selected third overall in the 2023 NHL Draft and stepped directly into the Blue Jackets’ lineup the following season. He posted 12 goals and 27 points in 49 games as a rookie before breaking out in 2024-25, when he tied Kirill Marchenko for the team lead with 31 goals and finished with 54 points. Over three seasons in Columbus, he has compiled 140 points in 213 career games, production that underlines his importance down the middle.

From Hobey Baker winner to international champion

Before turning pro, the Nobleton, Ont., product dominated at the NCAA level with the University of Michigan. In 2022-23 he recorded 30 goals and 65 points in just 36 games, becoming only the third freshman ever to win the Hobey Baker Award as the top player in U.S. college hockey.

Fantilli’s résumé also includes success on the international stage with Canada. He captured gold at both the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship and the 2023 IIHF World Championship. With his future now secured in Columbus on a long-term deal, the Blue Jackets are clearly betting that this track record of impact play will continue to anchor their offence for years to come.
