The Calgary Flames opened their season with a lopsided 6-1 loss to the Seattle Kraken on Thursday night, a disappointing result in what was the club’s final home opener at the Saddledome before next year’s move to Scotia Place.
Vince Dunn led the way for Seattle with a three-point performance, scoring once and adding two assists. Jordan Eberle, Frederick Gaudreau, Chandler Stephenson, Matty Beniers and Kaapo Kakko also scored for the Kraken. Ryan Strome had the only goal for Calgary, while Joey Daccord stopped 24 shots and chipped in an assist for Seattle.
Kraken seize early control with three-goal first period
Seattle set the tone early, building a 2-0 lead before the midway point of the first period. Eberle opened the scoring on the power play at 9:10, and Dunn doubled the advantage just 32 seconds later. The Kraken added further insurance in the final minute of the frame when Gaudreau finished off a cross-ice feed from Kakko and beat Dustin Wolf from a sharp angle with 30 seconds remaining.
The visitors pulled away for good in the third period. A mishap between Flames defencemen Zach Whitecloud and Yan Kuznetsov led to a breakaway for Stephenson, who capitalized after Whitecloud clipped his partner’s skates and both went down. Less than a minute later, Beniers blasted a shot past Wolf to stretch the lead further.
Strome denied Daccord a shutout when he scored at 16:35 of the third, but Kakko restored the five-goal margin only 34 seconds later, rounding out Seattle’s offensive outburst.
Defensive commitment, individual milestones stand out
Seattle’s defensive effort was reflected in the shot-block totals, with the Kraken getting in front of 20 attempts compared to eight blocks for Calgary. Jared McCann quietly put together a three-assist night, while Gaudreau extended his point streak against the Flames to six consecutive games.
Wolf made 26 saves in defeat and produced one of Calgary’s few highlights late in the second period when he recovered from a misread off the end boards to glove an Eberle chance and prevent a second goal from the Seattle winger. The game also marked a milestone for Whitecloud, who appeared in his 400th NHL contest.
Short-handed lineups and what comes next
Both clubs were missing key pieces. The Kraken were without winger Matthew Samoskevich (upper-body injury) and centre Jake O’Brien (lower-body injury), while the Flames did not have winger Jonathan Huberdeau available due to a hip issue. Despite those absences, Seattle secured its first road win in a season opener in franchise history, improving its all-time away opener record to 1-2-1 in its six-year existence.
Calgary’s opening-night roster carried an average age of 27, tying for the seventh-youngest group in the league, while Seattle’s came in at 28.3 years. The Flames will look to regroup on Saturday when they visit the Vancouver Canucks, and the Kraken continue their Western Canadian swing the same night with a matchup against the Edmonton Oilers.
