New York Islanders defenceman Matthew Schaefer is entering his second NHL season determined to push his game to a new level on Long Island. The 19-year-old is coming off a standout rookie year that earned him the Calder Trophy, and his rapid rise has already sparked talk within the organization that he could one day wear the captain’s "C".

Calder winner already drawing captaincy talk

Schaefer quickly established himself as an impact player at both ends of the ice, showing high-end skill in transition while embracing difficult defensive assignments. His calm under pressure, relentless competitiveness and attention to details in his own zone helped make him a unanimous Calder winner and a foundation piece for the franchise.

Head coach Peter DeBoer has gone as far as to say he expects Schaefer to be a future captain of the team. That endorsement comes just weeks after the Islanders named veteran centre Bo Horvat captain in mid-September, underscoring how strongly the organization believes in Schaefer’s long-term leadership potential on a roster that has been searching for a true superstar to build around.

Support system on Long Island shaping Year 2

Schaefer spent his rookie season living with longtime Islanders forward Matt Martin, and that arrangement will continue this year. The setup has eased the transition for both him and his family, and he says he loves Long Island, his teammates and the staff around the club. He describes last season as the most fun he has had playing hockey, crediting the people in his support network for creating an environment where he arrives at the rink smiling and, in his words, "ready to learn."

Speaking at the NHL Player Media Tour in Las Vegas, Schaefer said the biggest adjustment in his first year was the demanding schedule, with games coming in rapid succession and very few days off. He learned how to manage rest and recovery, take better care of his body and still play close to full capacity night after night. With that experience behind him, he expects to be better prepared for the grind and believes his second season can take another step forward.

Growth first, payday later

Schaefer’s emergence comes at a time when elite defencemen are landing record contracts, highlighted by Colorado Avalanche star Cale Makar’s 20-million-dollar-per-year extension. Schaefer called that kind of deal positive for the league but stressed that negotiating numbers is his agent’s responsibility, joking that math was never his strong suit.

For now, his focus is on refining a two-way style that has already made him one of the Islanders’ most important players. Schaefer says he loves playing defence because it allows him to influence the game in both zones: some nights he leans more defensive, with fewer touches in the offensive end, while on others he feels the rhythm offensively and joins the attack more often. That balanced approach, combined with his maturity off the ice, is fueling speculation that it may only be a matter of time before he takes on an official leadership role in New York.
