Statistics glossary

What each abbreviation in our tables means, and how to read it.

Contracts

NMCNo-movement clause
Full protection: the club cannot trade the player, place him on waivers or send him down without his consent.
NTCNo-trade clause
The player cannot be traded without his consent, but remains subject to waivers and a demotion.
M-NTCModified no-trade clause
Partial protection: the player submits a list of teams he will accept, or refuse, a trade to.
ELCEntry-level contract
Entry-level contract: a drafted player's first deal, with a capped salary and a term set by the collective agreement.
StdStandard contract
Standard contract: the ordinary deal for a league player, freely negotiated under the salary cap.
Std (Ext)Standard contract extension
Standard contract extension: signed before the current deal expires, it takes effect the following season.
Bidir.Two-way contract
Two-way contract: the salary changes depending on whether the player is in the league or with the farm club.

Two-way contract extension, signed before the current deal expires.
35+35-plus contract
35-plus contract: signed at age 35 or older, its cap charge stays with the team even if the player retires.
35+ (Ext)35-plus extension
Extension of a 35-plus contract, under the same cap rules.
ExtExtension
Contract extension signed before the current deal expires.
UFAUnrestricted free agent
Unrestricted free agent: at expiry he signs wherever he wants and his former club receives nothing.
RFARestricted free agent
Restricted free agent: his club keeps first refusal and can match a rival's offer.
RFA (Arb)RFA with arbitration rights
Restricted free agent with arbitration rights: an arbitrator can set his salary if the two sides cannot agree.
RFA (10.2)RFA under clause 10.2(c)
Restricted free agent under clause 10.2(c): his club keeps his rights without having to make him an offer.
UFA (G6)Group 6 free agent
Group 6 free agent: a veteran with few league games, he reaches free agency earlier than the general rule.
Non-rosterNon-roster
Under contract with the club but outside the active roster: farm team, junior or college.
InactiveInactive
Held out of the active roster, most often through long-term injury.
Dead capDead cap
Bought-out or terminated contract: the player no longer plays for the club, but the charge still counts against its cap.
PTOProfessional tryout
Tryout agreement: the player attends camp with no guaranteed contract and no cap impact.

Skaters

GPGames played
Number of games in which the player took at least one shift.
GGoals
Pucks the player put in the opposing net, overtime included. Shootout goals are counted separately.
AAssists
At most two players are credited on each goal — those who touched the puck immediately before the scorer.
PTSPoints
Goals plus assists. It is the reference ranking for scorers.
+/-Plus-minus
Goals his team scored minus goals it allowed while he was on the ice, at even strength and shorthanded. Power-play goals are excluded.
PIMPenalty minutes
Total minutes served in the penalty box.
P/GPPoints per game
Points divided by games played. It lets an injured player be compared with one who played the full season.
EVGEven-strength goals
Goals scored while both teams have the same number of skaters.
EVPEven-strength points
Goals and assists earned five on five or at equal strength.
PPGPower-play goals
Goals scored while the opponent is serving a penalty.
PPPPower-play points
Goals and assists collected with the extra skater.
SHGShorthanded goals
Goals scored while his own team is serving a penalty.
SHPShorthanded points
Goals and assists collected a skater short.
OTGOvertime goals
Goals scored in the extra period, which end the game.
GWGGame-winning goals
The goal that gives his team a lead it never surrenders: in a 4-2 win, it is the third one.
SOGShots on goal
Shots on target that the goaltender must stop. Blocked and missed shots are excluded.
S%Shooting percentage
Goals divided by shots on goal: the share of shots that end up in the net.
TOI/GTime on ice per game
Average minutes played per game, all situations combined.
FOW%Faceoff win percentage
Faceoffs won out of those taken. It says little below a hundred draws.
HITHits
Body checks delivered on an opponent carrying the puck, counted by the game's official scorer.
BLKBlocked shots
Opposing shots intercepted with the body or stick before they reach the goaltender.
S/CShoots / catches
Dominant hand: shooting side for a skater, glove hand for a goaltender.

Goaltenders

WWins
Games in which the goaltender was on the ice for his team's winning goal.
LLosses
Games lost in regulation while he was in net.
OTLOvertime losses
Defeats taken in overtime or the shootout. The team still earns a standings point.
GAAGoals against average
Goals allowed per sixty minutes of play. The lower the number, the better.
SV%Save percentage
Saves divided by shots faced. It is the most telling measure of a goaltender's work, independent of the defence in front of him.
SOShutouts
Games finished without allowing a single goal, start to finish.
SVSaves
Shots on goal the goaltender stopped.

Teams

GFGoals for
Goals the team has scored since the start of the season.
GAGoals against
Goals the team has allowed since the start of the season.
PP%Power play
Share of power plays converted into a goal. Around 20% is the league average.
PK%Penalty kill
Share of penalties killed without conceding. Around 80% is the league average.
