Winnipeg Jets unify franchise record book across both eras

The Winnipeg Jets’ franchise history is getting a major rewrite. The club and the NHL announced Thursday that the team’s official statistical records will now encompass both eras of the Jets in Winnipeg, bringing the original 1979–1996 chapter under the same umbrella as the current team that arrived in 2011.

Hawerchuk back on top of Jets record book

The change restores Dale Hawerchuk to the top of the Jets’ all-time scoring list. During his years in Winnipeg from 1981 to 1990, Hawerchuk recorded 379 goals and 929 points, totals that once again stand as franchise records in the city where he built his legacy. His No. 10 was retired in 2007 by the organization after relocation, even though his playing days with the club came entirely in the original Jets era.

Thomas Steen also moves back into a familiar spot as the franchise’s assists leader with 553. Stars from the first Jets era such as Hawerchuk, Steen and Teemu Selanne are no longer tucked away in a record book tied to a fan base that never watched them in person, but instead reconnected with the team identity in Winnipeg.

The update also reframes the place of the current core. Mark Scheifele, whose career totals sit at 372 goals, 535 assists and 907 points with the Jets, now trails Hawerchuk and Steen directly in the combined franchise record book. He enters the 2026-27 season with a realistic chance to take over top spot in goals, assists and points.

Thrashers history included, Coyotes narrowed to Arizona years

Along with unifying the two Jets eras, the franchise will continue to carry the statistical history of the Atlanta Thrashers from 1999 to 2011. All of those seasons are now formally part of the Jets’ overall historical record, creating one continuous line from the club’s origin through its time in Atlanta and back to Winnipeg.

On the other side of the split, the inactive Coyotes franchise will only retain its Arizona-based numbers from 1996 to 2024. Those statistics will no longer be counted within the Jets’ records. The Coyotes halted operations in 2024, and the team’s assets were later acquired by the expansion Utah Mammoth, who are building a new history of their own.

The original Jets retired four jersey numbers: Bobby Hull’s 9 and Steen’s 25 before relocation, followed by Hawerchuk’s 10 and Teppo Numminen’s 27. The current Jets have yet to retire a number, but with a consolidated record book now in place, the organization has a clearer framework for honouring both its past stars and its modern era.
